Due to the fact that Thandiswa Mazwai's mother, Belede Vabaza Mazwai, passed away when Thandiswa was sixteen years old, the name Belede is a memorial to her.

This CD is Thandiswa's way of paying respect to the rebellious attitude of a number of different people, including politicians and artists.

According to urban legend, Thandiswa's mother was a social justice activist for the same reasons that the musicians included on this album were at the time.

Additionally, Belede served as a member of the support staff for the PAC underground throughout the apartheid era.

She went to Wits University when she was working as a reporter for the Sunday Star but she did not graduate. Belede is said to have been a fan of Kwame Nkrumah's works, that is, according to rumours.

Thandiswa's voice is complemented by the album's inclusion of instrumentalists who are either just beginning their careers or have already established themselves as a prominent figure in their field.

An aura of contemporary free jazz avant-garde may be found in her interpretations of powerful songs by South African giants such as Miriam Makeba, Dorothy Masuku, Caiphus Semenya, and others.

This CD is a celebration of the golden period of South African music before it became popular.
