South African great Thandiswa Mazwai has been really active lately. Reintroducing her glittering back catalogue to music lovers, she recently gave a fantastic Tiny Desk Concert. She lauded her own country passionately throughout the performance, confirming the ongoing relationship between her creative expression and cultural manifestations.

Having recently marked the 20th anniversary of her ground-breaking solo debut, Zabalaza, Mazwai is already working on her next album. There is a prearranged sequence in which fans may listen to her new album Sankofa, which is set to be released on May 10. One such is "Kulungile," the new single that dropped today; its brilliance offers a preview of what's to come on that album.

Traditional instruments and soft drumming provide "Kulungile," which translates to "it is well" in isiXhosa, a soothing atmosphere. It features the remarkable Nduduzo Makhathini and demonstrates the musical prowess that Mazwai has shown since starting her solo career.

The first track "Kulungile" off my upcoming album Sankofa is about moving over childhood traumas that we never truly get over. These elements usually affect how we behave and see ourselves in the surroundings. Writing this song was an attempt to confront those wounds and promote healing.

"Sankofa in Ghanaian language Twi means to go back and fetch what's left behind, what is important, what honours you, and what needs healing." Mazwai discusses her forthcoming CD.
